On Saturday, 31 January, we bid farewell to the first month of the year with a unique musical experience. The events hall of the Foundation filled with the timeless melodies of Ludwig van Beethoven – music that touches every era and every person.

The evening’s programme included the early Piano Trio (Op. 1), as well as 10 Folk Songs based on traditional melodies from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and England, set to lyrics by great poets of the 18th century.

The concert culminated with the famous Trio, Op. 70, No. 1 in D Major, known as the “Ghost.” This nickname stems from the eerie, “haunted” atmosphere of its second movement, which is rumoured to have been composed by Beethoven with Shakespeare’s Macbeth in mind.

Mezzo-soprano Laura Mamakos, pianist Maria Efstratiadi, violinist Vanessa Athanasiou, and cellist Elli Filippou performed the works with virtuosity and rare sensitivity, bringing out the composer’s universal language.

Lucky were the classical music lovers who attended the concert.

In our own time, the power of Beethoven’s music remains an act of catharsis!
