Painting Department
The aim of the Painting department is to introduce students to the visual arts and to help them discover the joy of artistic practice — through a balanced combination of research, experimentation and the creation of original works. Students develop both practical skills and a deeper understanding of art as a phenomenon, nurturing them as creative practitioners and as thoughtful, engaged audiences.
Children experiment with a variety of materials to create their own works of art. They express ideas, experiences and emotions through what they make, building knowledge and understanding of the visual arts along the way. Above all, they discover that art is a powerful and joyful means of expression.
Children explore and experiment with a range of materials, techniques and approaches in the creation of their own works. They develop ideas and express emotions through the process of making, and begin to identify formal elements within works of art. They come to understand that art gives expression to the values, perspectives and ideas of our own culture and of others.
Children work with new materials and techniques, creating both two- and three-dimensional works to express their ideas, emotions and experiences. They learn to absorb new information and translate it creatively to enrich their work. They begin to recognise that there are many ways of approaching an artistic subject and that different solutions are always possible.
Students develop and refine their command of a range of media and techniques. They cultivate visual and perceptual awareness of space, structure, movement, colour and light as they appear in works of art. Drawing inspiration from the work of artists across traditions, they continuously improve their own practice and learn to devise creative solutions to artistic challenges.
