1ο MusiKaloy Festival
1ο MusiKaloy Festival
The Kalogeropoulos Foundation is proud to present the 1st MusiKaloy Festival in Corinth- an initiative dedicated to the development of art and culture across the Peloponnese and beyond, with the ambitious aim of establishing it as an annual event.
Faithful to the vision of the Foundation’s late founder, Nikolaos Kalogeropoulos- a distinguished figure in philosophy and the sciences, and a lifelong advocate for high-level artistic education and cultural development in Corinthia- the Foundation brings this longstanding dream to life through a festival centred on the art of music.
The festival has been built around a commitment to programming of the highest standard, bringing together outstanding artists from Greece and abroad. At the heart of its philosophy lies a guiding principle: the union of enjoyment and learning. Every performance, every presentation, every event must speak directly to both. As Plato wrote, “Education is the medicine of the soul.”
“Corinth has always been a vital crossroads of culture. The arts, philosophy and the sciences flourished here. Music has held a place of honour in Corinth since the time of Arion the citharist, who served at the court of Periander, and this tradition has continued through the many musical ensembles that have graced the city over the centuries. Drawing on this rich heritage, and on six years of experience working alongside dozens of musical groups and outstanding musicians at the Kalogeropoulos Foundation for Arts and Culture, we are making a long-held dream a reality. We are proud to present the 1st MusiKaloy Classical Music Festival in Corinth. Our aim is to offer the people of this city the opportunity to enjoy great music performed by orchestras and distinguished soloists from around the world, and to re-establish Corinth as a destination for music lovers from across Greece and beyond. We hope it will grow into an institution of Corinthian and Peloponnesian significance, taking its place among the most important classical music festivals in Greece- and, why not, in Europe.”
Maria Christara, President of the Kalogeropoulos Foundation
“I would like to welcome all friends of music to the MusiKaloy Festival- a unique series of events that aspires to become an annual tradition and an opportunity to share our love of music with you. This is a first, deeply promising step, and already this inaugural edition brings together exceptional artists from Greece and abroad. We extend our warm thanks to the Ministry of Culture and the Region of the Peloponnese for their support and patronage. I wish every success to all those taking part, and many more years of life to the most beautiful musical adventure in Corinth.”
Panagiotis Theodosiou, Artistic Director of the Festival

Arion- the celebrated musician of ancient Corinth- takes centre stage in Panagiotis Theodosiou’s musical performance Arion and Periander, for narrator, instrumental ensemble and visual interventions. We follow the story of this hero of antiquity who, in the time of the tyrant Periander- as the historian Herodotus recounts- tests his fate on a journey to Italy and a perilous return to Greece, and to the city of Corinth. The two events that follow share a common theme: Ithaca– both as the beloved poem by Constantine Cavafy and as the eternal destination each of us carries within.

13 November- "Arion and Periander"
A musical performance with narration by Panagiotis Theodosiou, based on the account of Herodotus- Histories 1.23.1 – 1.24.8
The musical performance Arion and Periander seeks to bring to life, through narration, music and visual art, the legendary myth of Arion as told in the Histories of Herodotus.
The original text, prepared and edited by the composer in close fidelity to the ancient historian’s account, gives particular emphasis not only to the central figure of Arion but also to the role of Periander, tyrant of Corinth in antiquity and an equally important presence in the story. The language is crafted to speak especially to younger and adolescent audiences, drawing on an appropriate register and vocabulary to bring an ancient tale to life in the spirit of a fairy story. The text also remains open to improvisation by the narrator, with the aim of encouraging educational interaction with its young audiences.
The music is based on reworked material composed by Theodosiou for children- including piano pieces and works for flute and piano- and serves both to frame the narrative and to illuminate specific aspects of the story: its characters, emotional states and imagery.
The visual interventions accompany the performance in a vivid and thoughtfully structured way, using bold colours and subtle outlines to evoke the images to which the story gives rise.
The structure of the performance follows a continuous interplay of spoken word and music, with moments in which the two exist simultaneously.
The narration by Konstantinos Riskas is accompanied by Stefanos Chatzianagnostou on flute, Manolis Lorentzos on violin, Alexandros Charalambus on cello and Katerina Liata on piano. Visual interventions by Olga Barmazi.
