EL SISTEMA GREECE
Free music education through El Sistema Greece (ESG) at the Kalogeropoulos Conservatoire is now in its third year.
El Sistema Greece- the music education programme for social inclusion- and Fondation Kaloy, Kalogeropoulos Foundation for Arts and Culture, share a common commitment: the intellectual development of children and the creation of a community centred on music, open to all regardless of background, language or religion. This shared vision has sustained a flourishing collaboration in Corinth.
The third year of the programme, hosted once again in the classrooms of the Kalogeropoulos Conservatoire, began in October 2022. It offers free tuition in violin, cello, clarinet and choral singing, using El Sistema’s pioneering methodology, with the aim of reaching even more children beyond Attica and demonstrating that music is the ideal vehicle for building an inclusive, non-discriminatory community. All instruments are provided free of charge to participants.
Since 2016, El Sistema Greece has been offering free, high-quality music education to children and young people from diverse social backgrounds at five locations across Athens, including refugee centres. It applies the teaching method of Venezuela’s El Sistema social programme- adopted by sixty countries worldwide and recognised by UNICEF for its effectiveness in supporting children at risk.
The partnership between El Sistema Greece and the Kalogeropoulos Conservatoire was born of a shared belief in the power of music and a shared commitment to the children and young people who hold the future in their hands. Though the two organisations follow different teaching methods, they are united in their aim: to inspire and socially integrate ever more children and young people, improve their quality of life, and cultivate, through music, a more just and compassionate society.
ABRSM
The Kalogeropoulos Foundation is proud to partner with ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music), one of the world’s leading music assessment organisations, active in more than 190 countries. Through this partnership, the Foundation prepares students for graded examinations in music theory and across all instruments at every level, as well as for the four ABRSM diplomas: ARSM, DipABRSM, LRSM and FRSM. The Foundation also serves as the official ABRSM examination centre for the entire Peloponnese.
A particular advantage of the ABRSM system is that students who sit theory or instrumental examinations from Grade 6 upwards may, depending on their results, earn UCAS points and A-level equivalencies- widely recognised prerequisites for university entry abroad, across all fields of study and not only music.
ROCKSCHOOL
- Rockschool is Europe's leading rock music examination board, offering qualifications across the core rock instruments as well as music composition, music technology, performance skills, digital synthesisers and music business.
- Founded in 1991 by educator Norton York and his colleague Dr Simon Pitt, Rockschool was born from a simple observation: that rock musicians lacked the same access to certification and formal education as their classical counterparts.
- In 1993, Rockschool introduced the first comprehensive graded examinations for electric guitar, bass and drums. Since then, its programmes have expanded to include piano and vocals, with higher diploma levels now available.
- Rockschool received accreditation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from the QCA in 2002, and all Rockschool certificates have been recognised by the ACF since mid-2010- meaning that candidates can complement their studies with a fully recognised qualification.
Special Partnerships
The Kalogeropoulos Foundation collaborates with the Special Primary School of Corinth and the Efthimeio Centre (www.efthimeio.gr) – the association of parents and friends of children and people with special needs – offering free music, movement and ceramics classes every Thursday. This initiative is delivered as part of a Programmatic Agreement signed with the Region of the Peloponnese for the implementation of the programme “Encouraging the Art of Music in the Regional Unit of Corinthia.
